Good News: Two Cleaning Products are EPA Approved to Kill Coronavirus

Posted by Sarah Human, July 13, 2020

As we continue into our fifth month of this pandemic situation, we’re all looking for a bit of good news anywhere we can find it. And of course, we want to continue fighting against this new strain of coronavirus in any way that we can.

That’s why this month’s news from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is such a happy change: Now, we know that two common cleaning products can kill the novel coronavirus on surfaces.

On July 6 the EPA announced results from their own laboratory testing, which shows Lysol Disinfectant Spray and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist are effective at disabling the coronavirus that causes Covid-19. Either of these products can be used in the home, stores, and other locations where coronavirus is likely to be lurking.

Infectious disease experts have repeatedly reminded us that most respiratory illnesses, including coronavirus, can be spread by respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing that land on surfaces like door handles and shopping carts. Later, another person touches those surfaces, transfers the virus to their hands, and introduces the virus to their bodies by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth.

If you’re concerned about sterilizing your environment with cleaning products, remember to focus on items that are frequently touched, such as door handles, countertops, steering wheels, microwave buttons, remote controls, and so on. Carefully wipe down electronics, like your phone or computer keyboard, with a paper towel moistened with the product so that you don’t get them directly wet.

Always follow all directions on cleaning products, in order to use them safely and avoid unintended side effects. If you have more questions about staying safe during the pandemic, talk to your doctor about prevention methods.
